1. Too much too soon.
Working out should be challenging but fun. Make sure you find the dosage and frequency that gives you progression and no pain. Obs. DOMS (delayed onset of muscle soreness) and pain are not the same.
2. Sub-optimal technique.
There’s not one way of doing things! We are all different and we adapt to changes, but there might be small tricks you can use that help you engage the muscles that you are targeting.
3. You don’t really want to be there.
OK, it’s January and it’s time to get a grip and get back in shape. You don’t really like the gym, you actually hate it, and that’s why you end up going a couple of times and then paying for something you don’t use. It is actually possible to get in shape by doing something you enjoy. Explore the outdoors, sign up for a dance class, try the kids trampoline or simply just try to follow a kid around for a day. You don’t enjoy brushing your teeth twice a day, but you still do it to maintain good oral health, so why should the body be any different? Find a couple of exercises and do them for 5-10 mins twice a day.
